them that you're rarely ever going to , use no win today's episode we are going , to be talking about a few different , things related to the stay skill and I'm , excited to hear your questions in the , chat I know now every single week we do , these train stations there for you you , know if you have a question about dog , training and today'd lo veto know if , you have a question about the stay skill , specifically but we'll cover all sorts , of different aspects of dog training in , this episode of the train station now I , see some people arriving in the chat and , let me know for those of you who are in , the chat already let me know where were , you joining us from that was pretty , interesting in the last couple weeks to , see some of the incredible places that , you guys were were watching from I know , allover the world I was quite impressed , but I see our moderators Becky Parker , and Dan and Ellington are in the chat , good to see you guys and I'm kind of , pumped now kale is just getting home , from work you say my name working yes in , fact and she appears right on cue it's , amazing did it good response to name , yes exactly but I see you guys jumping , in on the chat Want to welcome drawing , up my best Bob Cross lost Bobby P limb L , crow curtain executed Frazier yeah so , Tucson Arizona Texas Oh Murphy's yeah , I'vie Hadar couple chats with Tim we , showed off Tim's dog to mention that , Minnesota Mexico Singapore so it's , really exciting to see you guys in the , chat today we're going to be taking a , little bit deeper dive into dog training , and I know lots of you guys have been , joining us from for some puppy training , stuff and this kind of conversation in , this episode of the train station is , really going to help you as you progress , really sort of dig in deeper to the why , behind your dog training but it's also , going to help those of you who have an , older dog and maybe they have had you , know some great response to stay maybe , you'vie lost it or maybe you never were , able to really , nail down that stay with your dog maybe , he's had some struggles we're gonna tell , you why it's such an important skill in , your overall in your overall dog , training but I'm on want to see the load , to everyone joining us from Alabama , Michigan Nebraska North Carolina Cos ta , Kingston yeah Florida yeah awesome , okay so this episode of the train , station we're gonna be talking all about , how to train your dog to stay and why , it'st he most important skill that , you'll probably never use I'm Ken steep , my name's Kyle McCain welcome back to , Maginot scale we every time we get , started Always start the live stream , conversation you're like well maybe we , should say who we are so I'vie remembered , it this time okay I'vie remembered to , include it my name's Ken steep I'm a , professional dog trainer and this is , Cal McCain also professional dog , trainer also time world champion of , dog agility so if you are into dog , agility you know Kayla's got tons of , awesome content that she can chat about , with you about so we bot hare trainers , at McCain professional dog trainers , where McCain dogs helps over dogs , every single week to become well-behaved , four-legged family members to come when , called to walk on a loose leash to you , know just listen you know is you know , bigger term as that is but it's , incredible the opportunity is we get to , see different breeds different kinds of , humans like different different people , learning patterns and that kind of thing , and how we get to see their dogs , transform through the courses I mean , that is really awesome I'm one of those , people I was a student , initially at McCain professional dog , trainers withdrawn my black lab hmm I , fell in love with dog training and long , story short now I'm sitting here with , you in the train station wearing a , McCain blue shirt so you know it'sit's , amazing how these things happen my , family'Stone the business for well over , W year snow so we help lots of students , and their dogs come to our classes every , every week we Think we have we , probably have the largest dog training , facility definitely in North America I'm , not sure if maybe the world sure yeah , you ha veto go on a mission around the , world , we are the largest dog training school , in the world oh yeah it'aright there , well we are we trading over five hundred , dogs every single week yeah it'serially , exciting and then if you are nowhere , near us since we have a lot of people , but they're allover the place we have , online classes as well so that you can , train your dog with us through virtual , online training for sure now I want to , drop the question of the day and let's , see if I can find it here so the , question of the day I like that I don't , know the question of the day it make sit , exciting yeah I know so in Ian a , discussion wit hone of our moderators , Dan Lu ton who you guy swill see in the , chat he'SA super helpful Sosa Becky , but Dan and I were having conversation , we think maybe we're gonna try this if , you have an answer to the question of , the day type hashtag quote I guess this , question of the week sorry so cache tag , Q OTW , and then drop your question so that we , don'Tim's it because sometimes the , check it's racing along and it's hard to , keep up but we would love to know is , there a distraction that your dog will , not stay for you know do you have , stationary skill and this distraction , maybe it's person Ora thing or , another animal let us know in the chat , what you know that distraction might be , for your dog and as we mention that'm , gonna drop this other social link on , her ewe'll get rolling along so I see I , actually gonna just mention this comment , loll TM says nice live stream Laurie , and David would be proud yet good , friends of mine , Laura Patrica and David Foster from , the live stream approach really great , people and they have certainly helped us , to get to this point you know some of , their tips and advice so absolutely it's , pretty exciting now down tithe stay D , let's talk about why it's such an , important skill now so before we get , there we use the stay in training when , we're training any dog older dog puppy , dog whatever will use a stay and we'll , use that stay as a really really , definitive skill , it'll be very formal we'll always use , this day we'll return tithe dog side , we'll really focus on the black and , white of it all because we know you know , that dogs learn that way they really , need clear expectations in this , is an excellent way to have show your , dog clear expectations but we have a bit , oaf variation we don't we see lots of , people use their stay for all kinds of , things but we then it gets really , watered down right for sure so we want , to use that stay for very specific , situations and especially in training to , really build value to build leadership , we talk a lot about leadership and we , know what the value that it has but we , also use something we call the weight , command now if some of you may not be , familiar with it but it's sort of in an , informal state and it's a really great , way to not lose that really rock-solid , stationary stay skill with your dogie , don't know if you want to add yeah in , fact we'vie learned over the years that , dogs respond really well to having , formal and an informal version of many , exercise sand one that you can sort of , remain like really really consistent in , structured with all the time will really , help solidify the behavior even more and , then if you have sort of a looser , version of it that you us eon a more , regular basis the dog tends to be able , to flip-flop between the two and have a , lot more success with both the informal , and the formal ones so when it comes to , the stay we have a stay and we also have , await and for us when we train stay , stay is our formal like stay there don't , move no matter what stay there until I , come back to you which is a really , important feature about the stay which , we'll get into why that's important in a , little bit and then weight is sort of , like our temporary stay so just hold , there fora second intend to release , you you can release them from any , position in relationship to your dog you , can tell them to wait fro many position , it's very very relaxed whereas the stay , is going to be a bit more formal it's , going to start the same it'seagoing to , end the same it's going to have the same , meaning all of the time and that sort of , creates Little bit more of a , more thoroughly understood behavior , because of the consistency and the , repetition of that we're like I said , before the the weights Little bit more , informal for sure now I see some really , great responses coming in to the , question of the week and I know I sort , of confused things because I'vie been , flip-flopping question of the week in , question of the day so some of you guys , dropped QOTD , totally fin ewe're still gonna we're , still gonna look at these but I see a , lot of similar things some not so , predictable things so drawing at my best , let's see this here dragon my best says , a bunny that's pretty tough one to , predict well it's a pretty exciting , thing , Melissa salt says a feral cat there's , over here John best also says small , other small animal sand this is some of , these are some of the things that you , know you it would be hard to setup in a , training situation but there are some , ways to train through it and we're gonna , jump into that in just a couple of , minutes but I think I shandy Blake , says agility or sheep yeah yeah I can , totally appreciate that he has a border , collie mm-hmm , Bob cross sloth Bob other dogs for sure , Eliza gray says my dog gets distracted , with other people walking hmm and Kelly , and Perry says other dogs not a prayer , for her to stay with the other dogs , around PS I love these live Thursday's , thanks you guys if you appreciate that , now let's talk a little bit about where , you might use your stay command like , where would you is in your everyday life , general things where we might use you , think well to be perfectly honest I , don't think hardly ever system to , my dog sit's not a common thing , usually do stay a lot when I have a , young dog that I'm trying to teach some , mindfulness some self-control if I was , going to use stay today for some reason , I would use it in a situation where I , really needed the dog to stay put you , know for example you know maybe breaking , glass in the kitchen and you want your , dog to lie down or stay you might use a , stay situation so the dog cycle there's , that word I better not move my mom , actually has a really good story that , she tells , with her dog that she had to use stasis , she was walking her dog at an airport , she was going to a seminar that she was , teaching at the time and her dog was , very young was Young border collie had , some training but it decided while it , was on leash to jump up on top oaf , railing Ora barrier a barrier yeah but , the border collie slipped and fell off , and was hanging and unfortunately down , below there was a very busy road highway , and the dog's collar snapped and the dog , fell down about six ten feet or so and , my mom panicked but of course was just , went into dog trainer mode and shouted , lie down stay anodize was the dog's , name laid down and stayed and my mom was , able to find staircase and then run and , and get to get to her dog and nothing , happen to thank God but my mom always , says the look on her dog's face when she , said stay was like whoa boy better , stay and she was so thankful that she , had had worked that exercise so much , prior because there was cars going by , and it was it was a pretty scary , situation , that's also another reason why she , dozen'talkie snap collars yeah for sure , because they come apart so easily so , she's a big believer of buckle collars , and she won't use snap collars anymore , with her dogs since that one episode , wolf in Canada it gets so cold that if , you're out for getting great dog they , can just bring you we have lots of so we , hear lots of stories of that kind of , thing and it's terrifying nothing to do , this day if you have a dog in training , no absolutely but so let's talk about , there's those reasons of the state , that'SA pretty scary situation but we , often will use our weight commando'll , use our weight command are in our lesson , all day everything all the time we use , it quite often for all kinds of , different reason sand in just a minute , we're gonna show you how to teach this , day and then we'll show you how to teach , the weight but I really want you to , understand that there's at here's a , difference in and there's a reason why , we teach two separate skills so the , weight command we would use for all , kinds of scenarios might ask our dogs , to wait so we right no wit's horribly , cold here and like super snowy and , slippery and if we're going up the , stairs somewhere for , example outside made ask our dogs to , wait so that I can sort of make my way , up thereto the door or outside or , whatever the thing is so that I don't , get trampled going up the stairs there's , you know it'SA lot less likely to get , run down , I'll put our dog's food down and I'll , ask them to wait you know or else in the , other order'll say wait and then I'll , set their food down and then I don't , want them dive-bombing in on that food , you know especially when we have all the , dogs together it's so nice to have a , little bit of control I use it a lo tin , the car so if Get out of the car and , don't want my dog to jump out like into , a parking lot or whatnot open the door , I'll say wait I'll get their leash on or , I'll just check my area and make sure , they're good and then I'll say okay and , let them jump out from there yeah I use , it in all kinds of scenarios where , need the dog just to sort of stop for a , second and pause and just sort of hold , position and you can do it in any , position sit stand down it's easiest to , start and sit but eventually when your , dog knows that you can use it in any , position for sure and I think that's an , important factor now we always say , things like your sit will include weight , weight in it just as a weight in it and , when it gets little bit more difficult , for your dog is when you start to create , distance away from them so if I have my , dog sitting at my side and we're , training or doing something or there's , somebody approaching Id on't need to use , a stay or away through right here they , know or we'vie trained them that command , position we would't use that command , with their dogs unless we had an , intention of leaving them where they , were so I usually don't stay say stay or , wait unless I intend to leave my dog , where they are and move away from them , or if I'min front of them and I don't , want the dog to come forward I would , also us ea weight in that scenario as , well but yeah if you say sit typically , they should sit until you release them , you don't have to say it a hundred times , or say wait wait wait wait wait the , whole time you want them to learn to , maintain the position so that you can , focus on another task while your dog , stays safe in that position yeah it's , super versatile and the scale mentioned , like it could be so did you say letting , them out of the crate like in a park or , something when we'reopening in the door , you did say that yeah yeah that is such , it's such handy skill and we see so , many people struggle and they're like , okay just gotta get one hand on their , collar if they're you know cars running , around parking lot yeah it just gives , you that moment to have some , Tirol which is so valuable that you , really want to have that stationery , command now one thing we'll often see , people do is use their stay when in our , opinion they should be using wait , maybe you're doing this at home and , let's talk let'maybe show how to train , we should talk about why we ha veto , though okay , sure because there's and this often is , like alight bulb moment for people so , when we say stay to the dog we want the , dog to remain in position regardless of , what position you left them in and we , want them to assume that when you move , out in front of them that you're never , going to release them so when we say , stay we would't go out beyond our dog , and then tell them that they could get , up we always return back to them , and the reason why we want to do that is , because we want to take away any , anticipation that our dog may have when , we use the command stay so if I walk , away and I tell my dog stay I actually , see a totally different dog when I leave , my dog will sit she's got calm era body , language she sits more comfortably she , knows she's not going anywhere because I , have never said today and gone out in , front and Ted said okay and let her get , up however when I use the command wait , I am absolutely okay with leaving my dog , and seeing a bit of anticipation in her , body she might be up on her toes , little bit more she might be looking at , me with him more alert focus because , she's ready she knows something's about , to happen and that'show I can get a , more relaxed day versus something that's , Little bit more what's the word Iowas , focused on the chat here and Is aw my , brain my brain is not coming up with , word hopefully you can fill in the , blanks in the show sorry anyway so , that'shy we have two different ones so , the weight something you use all the , time you have a dog that when you leave , them they're sort of anticipating the , next thing and then this day is sort of , like that that's day a lot of people say , well why bother teaching them as staved , that's not dozen't sound very convenient , and we love to teach this day because , number one it makes your weight better , and number two it's really good , especially with young dogs that maybe , you don't have very good impulse control , or maybe you're having some leader , ship issues where they're not being as , respectful as maybe they should it's a , really good thing to do so stay is one , of the things that one of the very first , exercises teach my dogs and puppies , actually mainly because I want them to , be able to hold position so that I can , take pictures of them but it's also for , my mindfulness and respect and teaching , the dog that yeah there's a distraction , there but I'vie told you to say and you , need to ignore that it really teaches , the dog how to be a good listener and a , half of self control so I do stays so so , so much when they're young and then as , they sort of get older and they're , starting to be under more control tend , to do stay less and less and then I'm , mostly doing weights but they bleed into , one another really really well awesome , so we're going to jump into teaching , this day okay and this I saw someone , mentioned in the chat who was it , Erik vane said or he or she said two , tooth stream number two for me well , guess what , Erik we are going to go over to the , train station now we need to pick a dog , we need to know which dog we're going to , use and this is a little bit more , impromptu you not gonna use okay what , about funky monkey who do you think , should do we have our dogs just off , camera in they're all anxiously awaiting , like oh is it my turn to come out and , play they know when we start doing , training you'll probably hear them the , rest of them are like oh I can'twat to , go and and play with these guys they see , lots of good questions coming in the , chat you'll also see our moderator Dan , Lu ton is dropping tons of value there , with some other lengths so if you have , questions about things that we may have , recorded a video about earlier then , you'll probably see Dan drop a link , there and that's what's going on if if , you have a question and he responds to , you so heading over to the train station , okay you are you ha veto step back a , little bit okay so when we started this , its day what we first need to make sure , that our dog can do is hold a sit at our , left hand side and we call this command , start position we begin in this pose , with our dogs for many exercises because , it gives USA moment to just kind of , connect with the dog get on the same , page get a little bit more attention so , we actually train them , get it and sit at our side so if I have , her sitting at my side , she'already learned to remain here , under distractions so we have that part , settled and we of course have videos on , how to teach stuff like this if this is , something you haven't even accomplished , yet no worries this is where you would , start now when I'm beginning to teach , stay and I always teach stay before I , teach wait because it's just better to , do it in that order what I'm going to do , is I'm actually not going to have any , food in my hand and this is where a lot , of people have trouble they often have , food in their hand and when they go to , walk away lot of dogs just not knowing , any better will follow their handlers so , no food in my hand the other thing I'm , gonna do ISO'm gonna shove in my right , hand and that's to make sure that the , hand closest to my dog and this is the , hand that we signal with for this , exercise he's closer to her so I'm gonna , say the command stay that's my verbal , command and my physical cue is gonna be , just a flat palm in front of her face , kinda like a stop sign so when I first , begin this I want to set funky up for , success so I'm not gonna say stay and , then walk away and just expect that she , does Ito'm actually literally going to , pivot toe to toe directly in front of , her so there's hardly anywhere for her , to go and I'm only gonna stand in front , of her for just a few moment sand , because they means stay where you are , until I come back to you need to make , sure before I reward her initially I'm , going to introduce the concept to her , that I'm going to comeback to her side , so I'm gonna show you what'SWAT it , looks like somebody's just gathered up , my foods in my pocket'm gonna tell her , stay and I'm gonna pivot out toe to toe , with her stay yes good girl and then I'm , gonna pivot back to her side yes , excellent and then I'm gonna yes a , reward with her in position I'm gonna , try it again , stay good girl stay yes good girl stay , yes good very nice and I'm gonna reward , her now if she was to get up while they , practice that so say Want to stand up , and she got up out of position all he , would do is shorten up on my leas hand I , would place her back into that sitting , position would stand up tall and I , would continue my exercise good girl , stay oh he is so brilliant Missy yes and , I would practice , not until she was sitting reliably now , okay Union now you can see funky , understand that she knows stay already , but when you begin you're gonna practice , that same step lot longer than what , I'modding right now , no she's able to stay so before I add , any distance the first thing that we , actually like to add to this exercise is , we act distraction before we add , distance and most people do the other , way around , and or most people will add both at the , same time so they would go to distance , and they would do a crazy distraction so , we like to add one element at a time , because it allows the dog to be more , successful in anything with the training , methods that we use Atman's is we , want to set the dog up to be successful , what they learn first they learn best so , my goal is not to put her in a situation , where she's going to do it wrong over , and over and over again my goal is to do , the complete opposite it's to teach her , how to do it right and get her to do it , right as much as Icahn so how I handle , my dog is very very important the things , about the leas hand the food and the , hand signal all of those stuff that I'm , telling you is because it helps the dog , to do it right right from the beginning , okay so I'm gonna add some distractions , now so I'gonna tell her stay I'm gonna , pivot out in front of her and then I'm , gonna try a very small distraction like , me clapping my hands for example stay , yes good girl if she's been settled , can start to introduce rewarding from in , front but when feed her I'going to , feed her in a way that she dozen'Tet , up from the sit so I'm not dangling it , above I'Mont holding it off to the side , I'm gonna deliver it in a way that she , maintains the sit I'm gonna try a , different distraction stay yes yes marks , that she's correct and then I can reward , after I say stay stay yes good girl , like my dancing that was a free dance , she's really good girl , now I'vie done three distractions she's , done a really great job and want to , keep doing it till she breaks breaks , position I'm going to tell her staying , and they come back to her side yes good , girl now what I'gonna do is introduce , the release to her so I want to train , fun that she must stay until she egg has , me comeback to her side and be she , hears me say the magic release Weyden , for my dogs I just say the word okay , which means she's allowed to get , so it looks like this okay yes I break , my body posture and make it a little bit , more relaxed and then I let her get up , from there so she needs to wait for that , particular command in order to know that , she can she can move do you want me to , go under any other steps order about , short little one of distance like no , maybe that would be helpful okay so when , we add distance and again want to , reiterate the steps that I'm showing you , I would work on for many more sessions , that what I'showing you right now I'm , kind of whizzing through some , progressions we would teach what I just , showed you over like three weeks for , example depending on how many sessions , that you're doing so this next step is , something that we would not introduce , until like week 4 week of our grade , program just to give you like a bit oaf , reference okay if I'm going to teach my , dog to sit with me at a distance need , to introduce new element that I , haven'Tet talked about and that is , what we refer to as a verbal reprimand , or a marker and it's a marker word that , pinpoints within one second of our dog , doing something wrong that they'vie made , they're making a mistake , in addition to that it's the same way , that Would use the word yes so within , one second ever doing correct behavior , I would say the word yes in that exact , moment that means you're right you're , gonna get a reward verbal reprimand so , for her she's a pretty soft minded dog , so I might say oops er Oh with a harder , sort frame dog I might say act and , give like a firm or guttural growl , would't do that too funky she'd , probably have a heart attack so I'm a , little bit more gentle with her so that , noise needs to be made the moment she , chooses to get up from that sit stay lie , down from that sit state would use a , little oops or uh-oh and that says that , choice is wrong and that needs to happen , the moment they break position and then , from there need to comeback and , follow through with his sit placement so , I would remind her to sit I would , re position her physically back into , position not taking her head off but , am physically gonna put her back I'Mont , just gonna ask her and then I would go , from there so I'm going to show you , bit of distance here so I got no foo din , my hands stay head up to me be awfully , to my leash good girl good stay yeah , now these are very minor distractions we , could talk about harder distractions in , a moment so she's doing really good , job so I'm gonna say yes but I'm gonna , give you a really important tip but I , don't want to do with an inexperienced , dog is reach into my pocket to get it , food when I'm here because a lot of dogs , will find that way too challenging and , they'll break the set stay and come to , you so when I have an new dogie'm gonna , tell her yes from here I'm gonna step in , toe to toe and then I'gonna get the , food out it's not till I'vie trained this , for a couple sessions well I bother , getting food out while I'm in front good , stay good girl stay yes stay oh she's so , goo dyes and I'gonna step in and then , I'm gonna reward her you are brilliant , good girl , stay now if I want to release her again , I need to go back to her side I'm being , consistent with my cues yes good girl , good stay you are so smart okay , and then I can let her up from there , back you know what Kayla's just dropping , the knowledge here in the train station , I I see em I'gonna turn the volume , down a little bit so I don'anybody , wearing headphones dozen't fall off , their chair but this is what happens , here at the train station wanted to , drop that to toot and I saw a sea , cruiser who is along time train station , passenger and I wanted to acknowledge , that ST cruiser was here and I saw some , really nice comments in the chat about , you kale about me yeah I was gonna bring , up because you would'likely see them , as they zoom by the somebody Lori , Randall said I meant about my dancing , I'vie been know I'm surprised Ashe I'm , just as surprised as you are that they , did't talk about your dancing I'm in , perpetual oh of kale and making Judo , tipper it said me to Laurie really , really nice really nice we appreciate , the opportunity to help you guys like , some teaching yeah I'vie seen so many , cable so many people in the in the chat , that have said like you know I'getting , a puppy or I'vie just gotten a puppy in , your videos have helped me so much and , that is why we do it that's why I know , how that feels , as a you know as student I know kale , you know can appreciate it as well you , know when someone , you value and it just works yeah and , when you get things delivered with , clarity and it starts to make sense to , you as to what you'redoing you train , your dogs so much better because you , have clearer picture of what you're , doing and then you get to be a better , teacher to your dog and your dog is very , grateful for that let me tell you they , love when they get good clear , information yeah so we're if you is this , your first time in the train station , we'll do it like a little chunk of , teaching and then we'll answer some , questions I see some great comments , coming in and questions coming in but I , wanted to point out couple really , important ones that Think are perfect , for this perfect for this to make , commented on my dancing that's Mike , so Shandy Blake says so if I'vie been , using stay as a more informal I'm going , to release to you to mien example , agility should you train a different , word for your more formal stay this is , exactly why we wanted to talk question , yeah so Shandy Usually have a weird , suggestion for you what I actually would , maybe do in the meantime is I would , actually change your stay for now okay , let me let me backtrack if you have a , solid start line in agility and feel , like you'vie told me that sometimes she , can Beau little bit inconsistent with , her start line , forgive me if I'm not remembering , perfectly about this but if you're , having if you're having no trouble with , your start line then there's no need to , change what Ian't broke just keep with , what you'vie been doing keep saying stay , then maybe use weight as your more , form alone that's totally fine however , if you have been having trouble with , your start line and agility and your dog , does sometimes break you may want to use , the stay command remove that word for , now may be always from agility and go , back and start working stay as I'just , shown you no wand build back up ass more , solid understanding of the idea of a , stay and then introduce a weight command , which is your current stay and kind of , start fresh with anew word and see if , that helps bridge the gap between any , confusion that the dog might be having , and then of course we could go on for , another whole slipstream , specifically on start lines and how they , get unraveled really quickly but you , want to try and really yes always the , first run then , fine for the remaining six okay yeah so , you may want to start using a different , word for yours for your start line in , agility and then save stay for something , a bit more formal'm guessing that if , you start to practice stay and you go , back to the dog side before releasing , even if you integrate that into your , training I think you're gonna find that , your state gets better because most , times what happens and you have a smart , smart dog Icon her she'Avery quick , quick minded so if you always say stay , and you walk out and then every time , basically you release her over an , agility jump she's gonna be sitting with , such anticipation she barely can contain , herself but if you say stay and you walk , out would prefer you to say wait but , you do if you'vie already said say don't , worry about it if you walk out and then , sometimes you go back to her while she's , on the start line and you release her , and you let gonad do something else or , you walk by she's gonna go , holy that was weird Iowas assuming you , were gonna do this ha ha ha you don't , want to have them assume or be able to , predict what you're doing you want to , keep them on their toes maybe you're , gonna say sick maybe you're gonna stay , down , maybe you're gonna release them that way , if you want to keep them on their toes , so that they're not guessing and , anticipating anticipating USN'tollways a , great thing in dog training sometimes it , is but in this particular case we want , them just don't sit and be calm I did so , there's a couple suggestions for either , hopefully that will be helpful yes great , so I just want to point something out I , saw some come couple comments in the , chat and I'm gonna put I feel , uncomfortable sometimes posting the , things when people are saying really , nice stuff because Id on't that's pretty , neat I know but it's just a little bit , uncomfortable and I need to for this , point Caloocan's someone who is in an , area with no trainer available Luna and , I appreciate appreciate you guys so it's , really really nice word to say and then , our moderator Becky said I was in a , similar situation I'm part of the my dog , can online training and it's amazing now , what Becky's talking about is our my dog , is Andy my dog can online training , program which if you're looking it's , kind of hard we do as much as we can , here on YouTube where it's a little one , directional and we do our that's why we , have the live stream so that we can have , this conversation but if you need more , personalized training we do have online , training available and there's a link in , the description below just for anybody , who's like I , there's videos to watch and like a very , structured program week to week , progressions so it's really easy to , follow and like in full support from all , of our staff it's very very helpful now , getting back to getting back to the task , at hand Tim Russell says the wait is , huge from my five month old Malians , when he's in the truck he's too young to , jump out so I make him wait so Icahn , yeah good right yeah and this is really , a great place where you can start to , differentiate now I know in , conversations with some of our students , and I know talking to Dan our moderator , you know I said there's you know at , first there was a little I was a little , confused with yeah it is a bit late , using in the stay so sort of a rule of , thumb for you at home is treat your , state your dog must remain in their , state until you get back to their side , you must return all the way to your dog , for Otto release them think like stay , forever wait for a sec yeah for sure and , your weight is that remote release cue , it's going to be something that'serially , versatile it's something that you're , gonna find once you start to , differentiate not only are you gonna see , the benefits from like clear , communication with your dog clear , understanding of expectations from your , dog because that is such huge part of , teaching this day it's huge anything , yeah well yet for sure but I think stay , for me especially with a wild and crazy , black lab as when she was a puppy it was , one of the things that Could do in the , kitchen yeah sure and I could be I could , be so clear about my expectations she , must keep her bump parked in this one , specific spot and then I'd returned back , to her I was actually the other day it , was really cold outside and I was bored , with the dog sand I put my two dogs , hippie shake our little tiny toy poodle , and then we have a Border Collie puppy , centrally puppy cos she's- so I made , them sit side-by-side like really really , close together and then told them stay , and then I would practice out of sight , stays sou would tell them to stay they , were in the kitchen and I would walk , down the hallway into the other room and , then I would walk back and I could see , them both sitting in the stay like kind , of wondering where on earth I was going , but it was just like a good little like , mind exercise for them yeah and tried , to make it harder by making them have to , do it like really close together it was , fun for sure I just want to say hello to , crystal the animal lover love from , another Canadian I know we have several , Canadians in the chat and they probably , don't notice us saying about a boat , there's no due to boot it we say about , normally yeah I know we apparently not I , mean we say it the way we say it it's , normal for us but If eel like they say , I'm more different in like Newfoundland , like Eastern Canada yeah yeah they , definitely feel like an unusual , dialect to beat yeah they're really yeah , they're really drag the words a lot B P , limb mentions awesome tips hope to see , you both in Singapore one day love to be , a great host for you that'SA really , nice offer now you had an invite to go , Dona agility seminar in Singapore it , just did't really seem to to pan out , it's a big trip when I need to be able , to take a lot of time if I'm coming to , Singapore I'm coming to Singapore and , I'm staying fora bit exciting yeah , that's definitely place I'd love to , visit though um let's let'Sgt right , into the wait because I know people that , are watching the stream are probably , thinking okay so I have a pretty good , idea of this the value of this day but , when I and I'vie been using the word stay , but what I really have should have been , using is the weight so let's get into , teaching the weight and how that's , different than the stick maybe's a , different dog think I should us ea , different dog in this this basically , just sets me up to drop another heading , over to the train station this is one of , my favorites this little one and those , of you in the chat or anybody that's , been here before is going to recognize , this tolerable from the show let's , head over to the train station okay so , let's talk about the weight teaching the , way so the weight initially when you're , first starting it actually beginning we , you're excited we actually started the , same way as our stay but there's a few , different things that we're gonna do now , when I first started to stay funky it is , not your turn this time to be quiet am , going to actually not introduce the , release right away from out front like , spoke of earlier'm actually just gonna , star toff , by building value of the weight and , coming back to her often so again in , hips it don't get in sit good so I start , with her sitting beside Meyers I can , even reward that because she did a good , little get in here I'just gonna fix my , leash again maybe she'sin my right hand , this time I'm gonna say wait instead of , stay and I'gonna change my hand signal , I'm gonna wave past her face so think , wait wave wait wait , good wait yes now if you'vie already , trained sky you'll notice wait said , wait and I went more at a distance and , if you train stay first you don't have , to go through the steps of being right , in front of your dog anymore you can , just build this since yes that's a good , weight good wait wait you'll notice i , re command her each time'm going to , walk away from hero say the word and , then clearly signal her good girl and , then when she's sitting comfortably and , she looks very steady am then going to , say okay yes good girl and then I could , let her come out of the weight from , there now oh she's excited she's , sneezing now when I'modding this I can , actually start to add little , distractions and build them up now I , showed you pretty easy distractions with , funky just because that was sort of the , beginning stages right I might as well , show you now with like maybe some harder , stuff so maybe grab like a little oh , this is gonna be fun okay get in I would , actually love for her to make mistake , because then I can show you what to do , so she starts beside me I'm gonna tell , her wait again nice clear signal wait , wait good girl wait yes good so I shook , the toy she maintained the weight yes , good girl you can see it's similar to , stay but Little bit different good , wait yes wait yes good girl good wait no , hippie likes toys but she really likes , food so I'm gonna try tossing a piece of , food on the floor now if she gets up , remember the first thing they're gonna , do is use a verbal reprimand for boots , and then I'm gonna replace her into that , same position wait yes good wait'm , through , the food utter wait yes you are the , smartest poodle in the room yes good , girl now I'gonna try one lark wait , good , wait now you'll notice I did't say this , before when I'm training my dog , hopefully you notice that the entire , time'vie been working with her my leash , has remained loose good wait okay , yeah good girl now why is it so , important to train your dog in a loose , leash it's because eventually your goal , should be to have a dog that listens , even when they're off leash and if she's , learning to listen or with my leash , tight all the time and I say wait and I , walkaway and I do this and Hold her , in a position she's not learning , anything she's just basically depending , on me to hold her in position and also , this USN'Avery positive as well I'm , choking up on her leash so I'm gonna , keep my leash loose when I'm working , with her if she needs some help because , she'smacking mistakes or she needs to be , positioned may slide my hands down , the leash may lift up on the leash I , may place her back into position but , then when she'siding the right thing , will immediately put slack in the leash , and keep it loose so that she's making , her own decisions to remain Ina , position you are so good good weight and , again because I'm using my weight , don'thieve to go back to her side can , just be out front okay yeah did you talk , Little bit about what if people how , struggled with being successful what if , their dog kept getting up yes so if your , dog keeps getting up you need to , consider why is it happening are you , building distance to too quickly are the , distractions that you're using too , difficult when you're doing this , exercise your dog relished't be , making more than two mistakes so if you , do something and you do is traction they , get up you do it again they get up you , do it again they get up you need to be a , good dog trainer and you need to train , what you're doing so that you're not , building on negative things so Would , just change few things so for example , here man sit yes wait if I was on the , distance oops so she just got off told , her to wait sit so I used my oops'm , gonna place her back good wait then , so being at a distance was too hard I , might practice and come a little closer , if I was doing like crazy distractions , and it was blowing her mind , I might wiggle my leash or just like , bend up my knees and make it easier yes , reward that and then build back up to , making it more difficult again but I , need to tailor what I'm doing in order , to help her be successful and if your , dogs really struggling you might just , literally do this good girl , wait good girl wait yes and just go in , step away step right back make it really , really simple and then build once your , dog gets a bit better good girl , okay okay ya yes more more knowledge , dropping knowledge all over this place , now you can hear funky monkey off-camera , she's very jealous she's the chose none , exactly so I'vie seen some really great , questions come in in the chat okay I , don't know so I wanted just before we , jump into your questions need to , mention that when you're training the , weight the most common thing people will , do is think okay this is the weight this , is the one where Icahn release the dog , to me and that's what they'll do's% of , the time is so important , good training train whistles awesome the , thing you need to really keep in min dis , with the weight you need to reinforce , that stay behavior the remaining in , position behavior more often than you do , release for some dogs they'll really , struggle with this so you need to maybe , for every ten times that you're training , the weight you need to reward nine and , release once maybe the dogs a little , stickier and they're you know you know , they're remaining position better , maybe it's you release them two or three , times so those seven or eight times that , you reward them in position and those , ratios may change as your dog gets , better or maybe as you change your , environment maybe when you're practicing , in the kitchen you can do lots of , releases because your dog super focus , but maybe if you go and you practice , your weights at the park or you know , where there'slots of people around you , might need to go back and reward way , any more than if you're in a Sere when , there's not much going on and that's , what being good dog trainer ISIS , reading the situation reading the dog , and the deciding what you need to do in , that moment to be helpful and to build , on successful repetition sand yeah I , just lost my train of thought was , gonna say you know what'serially , important what what's really important , I'vie just lost track of it I don't , remember what it was , see what were we just talking about , rewarding the position we were changing , moment ultimately what you're going to , you you won't have to reward anymore at , all like using this sort of workflow or , using this train training method there , will become a point where that release , is is gratifying enough for your dog , coming back praising and petting them , you know you're not gonna be reliant on , food for the rest of your training yeah , that's our goal that is a good point , I mean the only time I do a lot of , rewarding with my dogs when I'm using , the weight command is in agility and I , do it because it's such a high energy , scenario but if'm using my weight in , my everyday life which I do every single , day I never use food anymore but I use , praise and sometimes the reward for my , dog for waiting is the fact that they , get to go I'vie actually done a lot of my , weight training that sounds funny wait , crush in military-grade he did make me do , push-ups in the kitchen the other good , noise Center arms were weaker and they , were where they not so will make the , dogs wait at the door for example and , will open the door and then as they hold , their weight and the doors wide open , then we'll say okay and then we'll let , them go and we'll let them run when , they're outside but they have to wait at , the door first but their reward is Nita , trick for us from us the reward is the , fact that they get to go out and play so , you can you can use it in all kinds of , scenarios yeah so I'vie got a couple more , tips for that weight but I'vie seen some , really great questions come in here and , one actually that our moderator shave , been sort of discussing okay behind the , scenes where did I put it there it is so , Dan and Lu ton our moderators say are , these just words if people have been , using stay when they really should have , been using weight is it fine to , interchange them as long as it's , consistent and clear to their dog that's , such an important question and , absolutely these are just word sin fact , why don'twee show off how , the word is less important than what you , reward with funnyman , maybe me setting me up for something no , one loves it I love watching this this , is so much fun for me when I see this , but if you were to train funky to do a , behavior to some word that you guys in , the chat just got his hint guys yeah , so basically Dan's right and that's , really important to keep in mind if you , have been using it incorrectly you can , always switch them around but what's , hard to remember sometimes is that what , one word means so if you'vie been saying , stay and releasing your dog remotely you , could always us ea place for example , some people use the word place or hold , or hold something that is you know that , more formal skill or behavior yeah so , really keep that in mind it's a really , great question that's why we have great , chat and that moderate yeah I think also , to to remember that if you have been you , know using them incorrectly at this , point like don'worry about it dogs are , super super adaptable I just again , know Keep making agility references , but I'just been training a lot lately , and I just recently changed behavior , that my dog already knows on one command , and changed Otto a completely , different word just fora couple , different reasons and'vie been working , on that particular behavior with the new , word for probably two week snow and , today I was just came from training , gave a really horrible physical physical , cue to my dog I was very late with my , cue but I said the new word and my dog , literally did exactly what she was , supposed to do on the word that that was , brand-new and it was so exciting I like , gave her a big reward and I was running , around I was like oh my god she know sit , I was terrible and she was so good so , but it showed me that just by you know , training that behavioral lot over the , last two weeks she was able to say okay , this this behavior was once this word , and now you want me to do the same , behavior but you want me to do it with , this new word and they're so smart she , figured it out no problem so if you have , to do that don't worry about it the dogs , will adopt they're very very good that , way you just have to be consistent in , fact we're gonna put this to the test , you really want to wait not yet because , we're gonna need there's a bit of a , delay and I want to get a great word , from so watching at home , this is an interesting thing that we can , we'll do you know with a dog to sort of , give an example of how you can get a , behavior to on whatever the word is it , dozen'thieve to so for example like , teaching funky - maybe lie down want , us one word in the chat that dozen't , have anything to do with the word down , and hoot and I mean maybe that'SA good , word but yeah that's a dance that so one , word in the chat whatever you think , we're gonna pick the most interesting , single word and Cal's going to teach , funky to lie down for example on that , word just to sort of reinforce for you , at home how important timing is how , truly important reinforcement is and , using your voice and all of these things , but your stay can in your weight can be , very different but if those words are , less important that stay could be you , could have your dog banana and they just , remain in one position banana so as we , see some word scan mean I see lots of in , the chat think it's because they want , us to use the word- -oh yeah maybe I'm , gonna go jump into this question while , we're waiting for some suggestions , also think Eleanor day I'm sure this is , Dan that said this but how many push ups , can Ken do live on camera at the train , station I think that's a great idea , great question well I guess we'll never , know , so from Karen GSD lover she says hey you , two from say here and enjoying your show , I was using stay for distance and wait , when I'm near the dog that makes sense , so it dozen't not it dozen't not make , sense it just it's not really going to , utilize the whole like anticipation , versus not anticipation thing so you , know there's really nothing wrong with , it but I don'really know if it's going , to make one of the behaviors better than , the other I'm not sure if you were , around for the earlier part of the , conversation where were you talking , about anticipation but basically when we , use our wait commands our dogs sit with , anticipation and ready for us to release , them and they're they're sitting sort of , Little bit more awake and lively and , ready Togo when we say stay to our dogs , and we leave them it dozen'really , matter about the distance in which we , leave them we could go far away for both , of these , exercises but stay the dogs eventually , because they know you're never gonna , release them from out in front you're , always gonna go back to them they learn , to sit and be more calm minded in the , state you can go up front and do all , kinds of crazy things but they're like , no you said stay I know you're not gonna , release me so you can do all those crazy , distractions and I'm just gonna stay , right here and we find that's how we get , such solid stays is because of that , allowing anticipation in in one behavior , with the wait command and in , discouraging anticipation with the other , one awesome so I see some words coming , in I see rutabaga pancake we're not even , sure I could say that claim effort it , could be the word yeah I think sleep oh , I mean that's basically shaping a trick , yeah almost and maybe that would be good , one and it's something that she would , have never heard before yeah yeah okay , I'll do any of them whenever you want , yeah well which one do you get to choose , because you're gonna have to tea chit , and the expert anticipation explanation , was so helpful to truly understand I'vie , used both commands for years which one , do you want to use you have the choice , between rutabaga pancake fart or sleep , pancake pancake okay you know why cakes , good pancake maker yeah I understand , entirely funky monkey I think she's most , fun think to show this off with this , train station episode is brought to you , by this train whistle I don'TKO what , kind of train whistle it is but Just , love to toot it and we're gonna send you , over to the train station here okay you , might need to back up just a little bit , [Music] , start with a little trick first okay so , I'm going to attempt to teach funky to , lie down on the word pancake now in , order to teach this to her I need to , first say the verbal command and then , within one second of her hearing the , commando need to lure her luring if , you're not sure what that is is when you , put food on a dog's nose and you show , them and have them follow it into , position so I'll use that to get her to , lie down and then we're gonna have some , reward now Have to do this few times , just to really let her get the hang of , it and that once I'vie kind of shown her , this is the word this is the behavior , would like for you to do other word'm , gonna then test her and if she's able to , do successfully I'm gonna give her what , we calla jackpot reward which means I'm , gonna give her lots of rewards one run , write a one right after another , am i speaking correctly yes okay okay so , I'm gonna get down here and it's gonna , put funky sideways so that hopefully you , can see a little bit better hippie shake , stop that she's trying to escape so so , half funky innocent so I'm going to say , the word pancake and then I'm gonna lure , her into it down one second later so I'm , gonna do it quickly back-to-back without , talking just why she can get the best , learning pancake yes okay pancake yes , so I say pancake and then ICU towards , the floor when she lays down guess and , then reward pancake yes okay , pancake yes pancake yes okay pancake yes , okay one more good girl pancake yes girl , so say the word and then Sigma one , second later now I'm doing it really , fast but if I was to do this in slow , motion I would say the word and then one , second later I would lure down now why , is that that is so important is that if , I was to do this pancake , was to lure her and signal her and say , pancake at the same time Funky's , probably not really going to pay , attention to the word dogs respond to , physical cues much much more naturally , than they do verbal cues so if I have , the food on her nose and I say pancake , she probably is like pancake whatever , there's food on my nose I don'really , care so I need to make sure removed , the food from hearsay pancake and then , lure her into position one second later , so she can clearly hear the command and , then be post into position so I'm gonna , go ahead and test her and see what she , does if she does do this correctly'm , gonna give Hera job pot and then maybe , you can give Otto to their kinsmen are , we ready for this don'TKO I'vie been , talking NOW don't know if she's gonna , do it we're gonna try maybe on ewe're , practice okay no III have faith in my , dog okay think she's the smartest dog , in the world and the cutest ready , pancake oh well done thank girl better , do it again just because it might be , okay here it's it wait nitpicking my , mom she already knows I'gonna ask her , good girl , you're so smart okay give me hugs give , me snacks nope she's like a furnace so , coming back that that's always fun and I , to be hones tit's such an important , thing for everyone who's watching today , for all of you at home to really , appreciate what what the words mean to , your dog yeah and funky Haskell spent a , lot of time using different training , with funky doing shaping exercises doing , these things so you might not have that , same response at home but the what's , important to understand you do it , quickly they know how to learn first , funky nose Funky's learned how to learn , yeah so when I teach her new behaviors , now in comparison to when she's a puppy , she just can problem-solve really , quickly because of the training so don't , be discouraged if your dog dozen't do it , that quickly if you do lots of training , they will get much faster at it so if , you'vie used the stay command and you , feel like boy I have let my , I'vie released my dog from a stay then , maybe that can be your wait but you'll , ha veto use another word and train your , stay as you would expect you where , you're returning to their side but I , will tell you definitively having seen , all the dogs that'vie taught and , trained can tell you that having a , reliable stay is a pretty good indicator , of the dog's overall listening skills do , you have a reliable stay very formal if , you have a reliable stay you are more , likely to get a dog who you know that , kind of that single act a single , behavior can impact all of their other , skills yeah often if I have a student , that's really struggling with stays I , either know it's because of two things , either the dog needs a little bit more , obedience because the dogs like no I , don't really feel like staying and , they're a bit bratty about it or , sometimes it's a lack of confidence and , the dog is really uncomfortable with , staying position while their handler , is at a distance so practicing it very , gradually can help build dog's , confidence as well it for hippy it , really helped Hera couple of confidence , when she's little when she I took our , grade one program with her she was like , four months old at the time and she I , mean she's small now but she was tiny , when she was that age and she was a , really good girl but she was very , intimidated there's a lot of people and , dogs around and sometimes when Would , say stay she'd look at me and be like , Mimi'm like her all right you're taking , me with you , and so I had to build very slowly lot , slower than any of my other dogs until , she would be like okay no worries you're , gonna go away you're gonna come back and , the nit just it really helped build her , confidence so I I really think it's a , fantastic exercise so I want to just , sort of wrap up the weight the idea of , the weight with a couple of words of , caution if you're training us at home , whatever your weight command would be is , be careful that you're not cuing , accidentally contour dog to release , from position so often we'll see an , agility especially somebody will walk , out to their their start , leave the dog in the start line weight , and then head out to their first , position and then they'll raise their , hand I can't see what he'slake okay or , you know release or whatever the thing , is well soon your dog begins to , understand that this is happens before , you say anything before they're actually , released so , this becomes your release can I'm , laughing at you because they think this , would be really funny if somebody walked , in we're in Italy later we're going this , way , so keep that in mind and be careful but , your timing so that's the other thing , that you need to be really cautious of , because dogs can learn these patterns so , quickly is that you don't you don't want , to ask your dog to wait take every , single time take three steps out wait , two seconds and then release , you need to vary up these times the , amount of time they remain in the state , the amount of time they remain in the , weight is so valuable don't always go , out until your beeper goes at the , one-minute mark on your watcher if they , never anybody wears a watch anymore on , your phone maybe but keep in mind that , you're really varying the times up so , that your dog again you lose that , anticipation and that is so important , when it comes to when it comes to dog , training because dogs learn so quickly , by rote yeah want to jump into a , couple questions in hereunto Blake , says young dog less than a year or , approximately a year is convinced that , stay just means try other things loves , to shape so really this problem , behaviors we mostly get it down or , sometimes a leg hug what advice would , you give to Shannon yeah that'pretty , common for people who do a lot of , shopfront conditioning with their , dogs , and that's great we love that doing that , training myself so what you're gonna , need to do Chianti is be more specific as , to when your yessing and rewarding your , dog so you're not just gonna be looking , for the dog to be sitting you're gonna , be looking for yes and rewarding calm , mind and that means that you might need , to yes reward more quickly before your , dog has a chance to get into like , creativity mode the other thing that , you're going to need to do is start , implementing replacements with your dog , so if my working is sit say for example , and my dog offers the down I'm not going , to just wait for my dog to pop backup , into sit I might stand right in front , I might take their collar and place them , into a sit because it discourages the , guessing and then once they sort of sit , in their calm then click forward or yes , feed while you're getting that sit in , wait so I would implement replacing the , dog in position rather than letting them , shape themselves back into position and , I would also make sure that you're being , really strategic as to when you're , guessing a rewarding doing it more , frequently before you're you don'twat , to access , we reward your dog for you know offering , something or thinking about offering , something you want to just try to reward , more calm calm - good right so I got my , best as I use a harness is it better to , us ea caller yes you have so much more , control harness is earned women are very , effective for training no they may stop , so people are always like well my dog , dozen'tuple when they're on the harness , well they haven't learned to not pull , it's just there might be some mechanism , in the harness that dozen't allow them , to pull but it's not great for training , it's not specific enough information , control over their head that'SWAT I , don'talkie about it so if you need to , turn the dog or if you need more , attention or you need to pull the dog in , your direction whatever it is it's just , not as effective so we usually we I use , harnesses with my dogs but I use them , after my dogs are trained don't use , them to train my dogs yeah good so em , r-mo one says my dog listens great , inside not very well outside that's , actually something we talked about last , week yeah so check out our I think it , might be live or we might have to send , you a link to that but that'absolutely , something that we have covered on the , channel and we definitely have videos on , the channel for you now something that I , wanted Tonto do but think that for , our moderators sake who's worked so hard , in the chat today is the push-ups live , push-ups oh you're gonna do it yeah I , don'really want Tobit I feel I owe it , to many Id on't know how many you think , you can do I'm not sure how often do you , do push-ups never I never do push-up she , tried to do a plank the other
